95% of corporate AI initiatives fail to generate measurable profit or impact on revenue

An MIT study based on 150 interviews with AI leaders, analysis of 300 AI deployments, and a survey of 350 employees across various companies found that most corporate AI initiatives underperform financially due to poor integration, misaligned spending, and a tendency to build solutions internally instead of leveraging proven tools and partnerships.
• Only about 5% of AI pilot programmes achieve significant revenue acceleration; the vast majority stall, delivering little or no impact on profit and loss.
Main reasons for failure include a “learning gap” in tools and organisations, flawed enterprise integration, and brittle workflows. AI models like ChatGPT excel for individual use but often fail at scale because they do not adapt to enterprise workflows.
Resource misallocation: Over half of AI budgets focus on sales and marketing, despite the highest ROI being found in back-office automation (streamlining operations, reducing outsourcing costs).
Success formula: Purchasing AI tools from specialised vendors and forming partnerships succeeds about 67% of the time, while in-house builds see success only about one-third as often.
• Startups that target a single pain point and partner intelligently with solution providers have seen revenues scale rapidly, sometimes from zero to $20 million in a year.
