RIPPL Roundup – early market snapshot October 2024

We bring you the RIPPL Roundup each month to provide an early market snapshot for New Zealand and Australian financial advisers.

Our Key Observations:

  1. 10-year Government Bonds increased across the board over the month of October. In some instances, as much as 0.5% for the month.
  2. Central bank cash rates were stable in the USA, Australia, the UK, and Japan. While New Zealand, Europe, and Canada cut cash rates, with New Zealand and Canada cutting by 0.5%.
  3. Core and Headline inflation fell in Australia, New Zealand, Europe, the UK, Japan, and China. The US saw Headline inflation fall and Core Inflation increase.
  4. Term deposit rates reduced sharply in New Zealand while continuing to taper off in Australia.
  5. From a market’s perspective, most markets were in the red in October, with the exception of the NZX50, S&P Global Commodities, NZ Bank Bills and Australian Bank Bills. This is a turnaround from previous months.
