Every Minute – Technology is ticking and producing data 24-7-365

Have you ever wondered how the internet is used, even for the shortest of time periods?

While the references are not necessarily comparable, this series of infographics highlights what happens when you’re connected to the internet, regardless if you are aware or not. Remembering as of 2020 that 4.6 billion people had access to the internet. That represents 59% of the world’s population.

Internet connectivity eeks up each year, accordingly we expect what is relevant in 2020 may not be relevant in 2022. This is due to business M&A and new start-ups taking market share. Further to that, new users joining the internet for the first time won’t know what some existing service providers are, which will shift the usage and access to different services. Ultimately many of the names shown in the infographic are investible. Some are amongst the most valuable companies on earth at this point in time.

A rise in users can be seen by comparing the infographics. The expansion of 5G, the continued development of cloud and internet-based services and increasing internet speeds have accelerated this growth. M&A activity added to this as the tech giants buy out the large disruptors of today. For example, Facebook has acquired Instagram, WhatsApp, Oculus VR, Onavo (the alleged ‘spyware’ firm Facebook shut down in 2019/2020) and Beluga (the messaging service Facebook acquired and closed in 2011, whilst in between it launched its own Messenger functionality).

So what did it look like in 2019 in pre COVID-19 times? Where we met face to face, met socially in bars and cafes, dined out rather than Uber Eats in. A big thing in 2019 for the following year was where we were holidaying, which country would we go to? In 2019 the thought of overbearing the hospital system was not a consideration.

These infographics speak to the changes that occur around internet usage, and the apps and services that are being consumed and used each day. The last infographic highlights what was popular when. Some are long gone. Some are stayers. Some come and go.  A short trip down memory lane of what was, what remains, and what is relevant pre and post the COVID-19 pandemic.
